Ceiling Fan Installation Tips

Need a ceiling fan to be replaced or newly installed?

Here are some tips on how to do it yourself.

Site & Safety Tips

Ceiling fans provide optimal airflow when hung at least 8 to 9 feet above the floor.
Ceiling fan blades must hang at least 7 feet above the floor. If you are installing a fan on a high or sloped ceiling, you may need a longer downrod to maintain blade clearance.
Ceiling fan blades must hang at least 8 to 10 inches below the ceiling.
Ceiling fan blades must be at least 18 inches away from wall, doors, cabinets, and posts.
Confirm the location on the ceiling and the surrounding area is not cracked or damaged.

Shut the power off at the circuit breaker box before beginning.
Verify there are no obstructions at the installation site.
Choose a UL-Listed outlet box marked “Acceptable for Fan Support”.
Confirm the electrical connections comply with local codes, ordinances, or National Electric Codes.
Read the manufacturer’s instructions for additional caution, safety, and warning information.

2. Cordless Drill with Long Bit

3. Voltage Tester

4. Wire Cutters/Strippers

5. Pliers

6. Screwdrivers

7. Electrician’s Tape

8. Ladder

9. Dusk Mask

10. Safety Glasses

Turn power off on circuit breaker & wall switch.
Uninstall ceiling fan if needed in following order: light kit, fan blades, canopy, motor assembly, then mounting bracket.
If needed, install support brace then junction box.
Mount ceiling fan bracket.
Assemble downrod & blades.
Hang motor assembly onto mounting bracket.
Install receiver module into canopy assembly & tuck into mounting bracket if using remote control.
Connect house electrical wires to fan wires (and receiver module if any).
Install ceiling fan blades.
Install light kit and bulbs.

Turn power back on and you’re set!
